The Messy Parts

December 3, 2018 Jillian Rash

Lately, I've been spending a good bit of time minimizing. Shifting through the overpacked closet and stuffed drawers, sorting through books, papers and files, and, most importantly the junk drawer(s). I started with one of my office drawers, though organized, at the very bottom I felt something peculiar. After sticking my finger, uttering a four letter word (or two), I pulled out a fly patch. A fly patch, in my office drawer. Note: I do not tie flies, organize boxes, or clean out waders, packs, etc... in my office, it is strictly for sewing and writing. Pushing a few files out of the way, I retrieved two full pucks of flies and a lonely mop fly, all tangled and messy.

This led into a day of crazily searching all of my drawers. Sock drawer, t-shirt drawer, junk drawer, kitchen utensil drawer, you get the idea. Once I had exhausted every single drawer in the house, I was now the proud owner of enough flies to fill a box, everything from streamers to eggs.

These discoveries ultimately led to a deeper examination of my life, as all things fishing related usually do.

At Least The Views Were Good

It seemed like the perfect day. The sky was overcast, but not raining. It was almost 60 degrees out and hadn't gotten below 50 during the night. We began dreaming of baetis hatches and big browns. It was bound to be the perfect day.

Confidence

One of the first lessons I received when learning to fly fish was confidence. "You've got to have confidence in that fly, in yourself," Jacob's words have remained with me all these years. It's why I fish certain patterns, choose long casts over short rolls and why I move through the water the way I do. It's all about where my confidence lies.
It's a funny thing when you lose your confidence.  Perhaps you've spent some time off the water or had one too many bad trips. Maybe it was caused by a harsh word or unfounded judgment by a fellow angler. Then again it may have just disappeared and you have no idea how it happened.
For a while now my life has been filled with surgery, doctor's visits, high water, and more doctor's visits, with strict orders to stay out of the rivers and off the mountains. My body became fatigued during the process and my mind weak, resulting in a catastrophic lack of confidence.

Plastic Bottles and Public Lands

February 12, 2018 Jillian Rash

There are two things about me that everyone knows. One, I've ALWAYS got a water bottle with me; a big 40 oz HydroFlask, covered in stickers from notable fishing and outdoors brands. Also, I will turn my nose up at you if you're drinking out of a plastic, disposable bottle.

Two, I'm outspoken and fiercely passionate about public lands.
